Today, on the great solemnity of Pentecost, the Church celebrates not only the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles, but also the birth of the Church’s mission. The frightened disciples who had locked themselves in the upper room to pray and wait are transformed into courageous witnesses. The Spirit changes fear into faith, silence into proclamation, and weakness into missionary zeal.

Today the Church celebrates the glorious solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord. After forty days appearing to His disciples, the risen Christ returns to the Father, not to abandon humanity, but to open for us the way to heaven. The Ascension is not the absence of Jesus; it is the fulfillment of His mission and the beginning of the Church’s mission.

This Sunday, the Gospel gives us a simple but demanding mark of discipleship: “If you love me, you will keep my commandments” (Jn 14:15). Jesus does not reduce discipleship to feelings or good intentions. Love becomes concrete—lived, embodied, visible. And He promises that we will not live this alone: the Father will send the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, who remains with us and within us.

In this Fifth Sunday of Easter, the Gospel brings us into the intimacy of the Last Supper, where Jesus says: “Do not let your hearts be troubled … I am the way, the truth, and the life.” These are not just comforting words — they are a path of discipleship and an invitation for all of us to dive into mystagogy, into the deep mystery we have begun to live, especially to our neophytes who received the Sacraments of Initiation.
